Today, I was three minutes into my run and realized, “I won’t have an opportunity to run tomorrow”. Innovative thinking kicked in and I decided to double my time from 19 minutes to 38 minutes. It is hard to push yourself and continue to run in heat for twice as long as you have been running typically. Nonetheless, I completed the 38 minutes, which I will split into two parts (one for today and one for tomorrow).
I see similarities between running a physical run and a spiritual run. A question all Christians should ask themselves is: how much time do I spend training spiritually for the long term competition? Honestly, this year has been great so far because my spiritual life has been strengthened through devotions every day.
We should consider though, that we could double up on our training to dig deeper in truth and purpose within our relationships with God. Instead of a 1 minute prayer on the way to work, try a 2 minute prayer. Instead of a 5 minute Bible study while eating breakfast, do that same 5 minutes at breakfast and an additional 5 minutes before you go to sleep.
My body hurts right now. I’m not whining, but I am stating the obvious and I hope you find truth in this correlation:
When we dive into God’s word and communicate with Him spiritually, our spirit and our hearts can hurt (just like hurt follows an intense workout). We don't want to hear the truth at times, because as they say, "the truth hurts"...especially when it goes against the way we have been living. Some might say, “Why would I want to hurt spiritually?” That’s an excellent question that deserves an excellent answer.
When our heart breaks, we become closer to God. When we mourn for the state of our relationship with God, or of the church, or of our marriage, or in any circumstance that is tied to God, we become closer to Him. If we avoid confession, communication, learning, and all other aspects of a relationship with God, we do not get any closer to Him, but yet distance and barriers begin to separate us.
Double up on your spiritual walk and see what happens…
Matthew 5:4
4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
